After a breath-taking drive to St. Simons Island across the F.J. Torras Causeway over gently waving marsh grasses, rivers and creeks, you will arrive at beautiful Epworth By The Sea. Secluded beneath moss-hung live oaks amid flowering shrubs, our winding walkways and lovely facilities welcome you.

Fellowship with other hostelers kicks off at registration as you enjoy punch and cookies together. An informal orientation and get-acquainted icebreaker sets the tone for a week full of new friends, new sights and new learning experiences.


Classroom Study, indoors and outdoors, is held in the morning by local instructors.

These subjects will acquaint you with the St. Simons Island area: Local history Southern culture Beach and marsh Georgia lighthouses Birds and reptiles of the island Southern authors and literature Barrier islands Local foods and customs Older adult leading roles in movies

Local interests include:

• Gullah-Geechee tradition of Sapelo Island
• Works of St. Simons author, Eugenia Price
• "The Jekyll Island Club" of American millionaires
• Study of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, and his time on St. Simons and in Savannah
• Georgia Lighthouses on St. Simons, Sapelo and Tybee Islands

Field Trips take place daily in the afternoons or on all day excursions. The classroom study comes alive as you learn about, visit and explore the many interesting places in and around the Golden Isles of Georgia.

Visit historic sites on a St. Simons Island Tour -- including the Pier Village, 1700's Fort Frederica, quaint Christ Church and the gravesites of Eugenia Price and the beloved characters of her historic novels.
